Bao Phi

Poet, writer, and community member Bao Phi talks inspiration, fishing, and his biggest fear.

Bao Phi is a Vietnamese American Minnesotan father, community member, and writer. A spoken word artist, published poet, and award-winning children’s book author, he was raised in Phillips in South Minneapolis. A two-time Minnesota Grand Slam champion and a National Poetry Slam finalist, he is the author of the poetry collections Thousand Star Hotel and Sông I Sing, both from Coffee House Press, as well as the children’s books A Different Pond and  My Footprints. A Different Pond received six starred reviews and won multiple awards including a Caldecott Honor, an Ezra Jack Keats Honor, Asian/Pacific American Librarians Association award for best picture book, the Minnesota Book Award for picture books, and the Charlotte Zolotow Award for excellence in children’s book writing. He currently lives in Powderhorn and works as part of the Arts and Culture team at the McKnight Foundation.
